Justice For Muslims Collective (JMC) Civic Engagement Campaign

Dear Community,

We are less than a week away from one of the most important elections of our lifetime. Today, we are thrilled to launch our JMC election brief called, We Count: Arab, Muslim, Middle Eastern, and South Asian (AMEMSA) Voters in Virginia. The brief gives an overview of our civic engagement campaign to call 65,000 AMEMSA voters in Virginia, our findings from a survey we conducted with low-propensity working-class voters in Northern Virginia, community reflections on civic engagement campaigns, and resources. Read the full brief here and share it!

Overall we found from a survey with 176 voters that:

  • The overwhelming majority of AMEMSA registered voters who took our survey stated a strong yes (86%) to voting in November. A small minority (3%) stated a strong no to voting during this election.

  • Issue Areas and Priorities: The two leading issues our respondents wanted the next President to prioritize were fighting racism and Islamophobia (40%) and expanding access to affordable healthcare (36%).

  • Public Health: The top two public health issues that voters wanted to be addressed were COVID19 (52%) and expanding access to affordable healthcare (39%).

  • Public Safety: The top 3 public safety issues that voters wanted to be addressed were hate crimes against people of color (38%)and police accountability and reform (36%). In addition, 17 percent of voters who took our survey stated government surveillance of mosques and Muslim communities was their number one public safety issue they wanted to be addressed.

COVID-19 & South Asian Americans | Live Interactive Map

The news around the COVID-19 pandemic changes by the hour, and it will be a long time before we are able to compose a clear picture of the ways the virus has impacted our lives and world. Thus, in addition to our report, we’re mapping community members’ experiences of the pandemic to help shape that picture as truthfully as possible.

SAALT launched its Community Survey in May, collecting nearly 400 responses. As we get more responses and the pandemic changes course, this summary and map will undoubtedly continue to change and grow.

This map and story encapsulates what we’ve learned from those responses and from the twenty-plus community members and leaders we interviewed, whose testimonials you can find here in our full report.

Chhaya CDC | COVID-19 Relief Fund

Our communities are fighting for their lives while losing their livelihoods. All the while rent is due, and children are going hungry. Low-income South Asian and Indo-Caribbean New Yorkers are at the center of the COVID-19 pandemic. Every day we hear harrowing stories from our community members — families grieving the loss of loved ones, standing in food pantry lines for hours, and struggling to pay for basic necessities.

In addition to continuing critical services to the community and advocating for relief from government agencies, Chhaya is also responding by bringing cash into the hands of those most in need. With the help of our partners, we have already provided cash assistance to over 200 individuals. Yet, hundreds more have reached out for our help.

Through the Chhaya COVID-19 Relief Fund we aim to raise $50,000 to distribute to community members struggling to meet critical needs. Every dollar raised will go directly to someone in need. Please help us reach this goal by making a donation now. For more information, please visit www.chhayacdc.org or email us at [email protected].
